چکیده

A central goal of the learning sciences is to discover principles that determine the optimal amount of instructional assistance to support robust learning (Koedinger & Aleven, 2007). We examined learning outcomes from providing and withholding stepwise instructional explanations as students studied worked examples and solved physics problems. We hypothesized that students would acquire more conceptual knowledge from withholding instructional explanations because they would be more likely to engage in constructive cognitive activities to understand the problem-solving steps, whereas providing instructional explanations might suppress such activities. Furthermore, we examined the roles of prior knowledge and student motivation in determining learning outcomes. Across three experiments, students in the withholding conditions showed greater conceptual learning than students in the providing conditions. Additionally, achievement goal orientations were more predictive of learning for the withholding conditions than the providing conditions. We discuss how the interactions between prior knowledge, motivation, and instruction can support learning and transfer. 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Research has shown that learning from worked-out examples (problem – solutionsteps – solution) is of major importance for initial skill acquisition in well-structured domains. In addition, research has provided knowledge about how to structure worked-out examples and how to effectively combine self-explanation activity and instructional explanations. The goal of the present project was to devel...

Worked Examples are More Efficient for Learning than High-Assistance Instructional Software

The ‘assistance dilemma’, an important issue in the Learning Sciences, is concerned with how much guidance or assistance should be provided to help students learn. A recent study comparing three high-assistance approaches (worked examples, tutored problems, and erroneous examples) and one lowassistance (conventional problems) approach, in a multi-session classroom experiment, showed equal learn...

The efficiency of worked examples compared to erroneous examples, tutored problem solving, and problem solving in computer-based learning environments

How much instructional assistance to provide to students as they learn, and what kind of assistance to provide, is a much-debated problem in research on learning and instruction. This study presents two multi-session classroom experiments in the domain of chemistry, comparing the effectiveness and efficiency of three high-assistance (worked examples, tutored problems, and erroneous examples) an...

Worked-out examples: instructional explanations support learning by self- explanations

Learning from worked-out examples is very effective for initial skill acquisition, at least when learners actively explain the solution steps in the examples to themselves. However, learning solely on the basis of self-explanations is connected with several restrictions, even when effective self-explaining is trained or elicited. Therefore, a coherent set of principles for integrating instructi...
